Earthwork and Site Development Johnson Bros. started in 1929 as a road builder in central Minnesota. Today, we can move more dirt in one hour than our founders moved in one month. In fact, we have completed high volume earth moving projects where we moved in excess of 14 million yards in 12 months. Over the years, Johnson Bros. has specialized in earth moving projects requiring a specific expertise. These have included: major highway work; river and channel construction; earthen dam construction for flood control, water storage and tailings deposition; construction of new gypsum storage fields; capping of gypsum stacks and hazardous materials; mining reclamation and major site development for power plants, industrial facilities, coal load-out facilities, entertainment complexes, and housing developments. Though many of today’s contractors are specialized, a distinct advantage of Johnson Bros. is that we are multi-disciplined. We self-perform all of the site-civil services, which include: dewatering, earthwork, piling, underground utilities and concrete work. This reduces costs and expedites the schedule, versus using multiple sub-contractors. Case Study Universal Studios “Islands of Adventure” which
included: City Walk; Portofino Bay Hotel; Hard Rock Café; Sand Lake Road
Complex
Johnson Bros. provided site infrastructure services on Universal City Florida’s new theme park. Our services included a million yards of earthwork, dewatering, and installing underground utilities—which included 17,000 lineal feet of storm sewer varying from 6" to 72" with 80 structures. In addition, 14,000 lineal feet of sanitary sewer was completed with one lift station, and an additional 71,000 lineal feet of 6" to 18" pipe was added to provide service for industrial water, chilled potable water, fire protection, re-use systems and natural gas. This project required Johnson Bros. to install 30,000 lineal feet of communications and electrical ductback. We also placed 10,000 cubic yards of concrete for footings and piers—and constructed 60,000 square feet of cast-in-place retaining walls. Johnson Bros. was also responsible for all storm water management for this project.
