St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board

February 15, 1996

Dear Mark,

The Stone Arch Bridge will receive a Design for Transportation National Award on February 29, 1996, to be presented by Federico Pena, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Scott Sanders, Deputy Chairman of Grants and Partnership of the National Endowment of the Arts. The enclosed brochure entitled The Urban Forum describes the awards program and the symposium that precedes the ceremony. Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board will be in Washington to receive the award

It is exciting to discover the Stone Arch Bridge on the front of the brochure. This is a second time it has appeared on the cover of a nationally distributed publication The first was on the booklet Building on the Past , Traveling to the Future, published last fall by the Federal Highway Administration and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to celebrate successful ISTEA projects. We were not involved in the design of either publication. But even as the Stone Arch Bridge was an icon of Minneapolis in the city's early years, so it seems to have become one once again Indeed, it appears to have extended its reach to become a symbol for successful partnerships and good design.

The award will be the third for the Stone Arch Bridge in the last two years. In 1995, the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and the Minneapolis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects gave an award for its successful adaptive reuse. In that same year, the Minneapolis Committee on Urban Environment (CUE) honored the many partners involved in restoration and reopening of the bridge for public use and enjoyment The Design for Transportation Award will be a first in national competition, although the picture of the opening parade crossing the Stone Arch Bridge on the FHWA/National Trust booklet was significant recognition in itself. Back in 1978, the bridge was also designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. All of these honors pay tribute both to the bridge and to those who have preserved it, assuring its active and useful life for years to come.

Sincerely yours,

Betsy Doe
Secretary, St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board
